Traditions, traditions, and more traditions.
Today, my dad called his sisters to ask about the Chinese wedding traditions. Tony's parents wish to hear from my dad and grandma about what they expect from the ceremony. My dad isn't very traditional nor does he know much about traditions. But there are some things that we must do. For instance, my grandma, my aunts and cousins insist that the groom's family bring over a roast pig. My dad and aunts insists on the passing out of the wedding beng ("cakes" or "cookies.") Apparently some relatives are still grumbling about the wedding of my aunt twenty-some-odd years ago, where her father (or my great uncle) did not pass out these cakes. Whereas my dad and I initially thought we only needed to pass out cards, my dad's sister say actual cakes must also be purchased in addition to the cards. What did my aunt do when her daughter, my cousin, got married last fall? They had the groom's family purchase 200 cakes, and 800 cards. My dad agrees we do not need to buy 800 cards- at most 120. I say, REALLY? Additionally, I thought immediate family was enough, but now my dad and his sisters are talking about passing them the cards out to all of the the descendants of my dad's grandfather, or my great grandfather. Why? So that no one gets confrontational because we left someone out, nor will we be hearing about it 20 years from now. I'm still digesting that.

so wait, when are you going to eat the roast pig, the wedding day? that's a lot of eating. I remember my dad got a roast pig for my brother PRE-reception cocktail thing, and it was like WAAAY too much food. we had to store the leftovers in the trunk of the rented Cadillac. sorry... not appropriate, I know.
We have the roast pig the week before the wedding. They will bring the pig over with the wedding gifts.
